Let's Go for a Musical Spin!

Post by Chibi Rachy »

All right, so I figured we could always use one of these. What are your musical interests? Do you stick with mainstream music, or is your taste more off the charts? Who are your favorites, and which artists do you love, but would be embarrassed about if some random stranger picked up your mp3 player or ipod and took a gander?

I go first :)

Most of the music on my mp3 player is not the stuff played on the radio. Some of the stuff is, but for the most part, nah. I would estimate that near 80% of my artists are female, with a few bits of male here and there. I just happen to love the female vocalist and doso love a good female rocker.

My favorite artist is Lennon Murphy, who I got into in high school. She's mostly unheard of. Her debut album was released on 9/11 and only 2 of her 4 current albums are available stateside. She's into hard rock is currently touring with her other band, Devil's Gift, which is her metal side project. Something interesting about her is that she writes pretty much all her songs on piano and then translates them into rock tracks. She's got one piano+voice album released, and has another to be released after she finishes touring with Devil's Gift.

My mp3 player is a mix of genres. I decided to list some of 'em, just so you could see:

- 12 Stones
- Alex Bach
- Amy Jo Johnson
- Avril Lavigne (pre-Girlfriend)
- Celine Dion
- Coheed and Cambria
- Devil's Gift
- Lacuna Coil
- Lady Sovereign
- Kenny Rogers
- Le Tigre
- Lindsay Lohan
- M2M
- Miranda Lambert
- Nickelback
- Pink
- Rose Falcon
- Spice Girls
- t.A.T.u

I guess if I had to choose the artists I'd be most embarrassed about, I'd go for Dolly Parton or Spice Girls. I grew up with Dolly. Got into her when I was 3. Even named my tape recorder after her. Spice Girls came after that. Usually when I listen to an artist, I listen for life. I don't care for stuff that's fly-by and unlikeable after a time. Gimme something that'll last, and I'm happy. Either that, or something to rock out to!

Your turn!

Mine would most likely be movie and televisions show soundtracks on CDs or on You Tube.
Rainbow brite fan since 1984.

In addition to the Rainbow Brite cd albums, I mainly like music from video games (especially pokemon). I don't really like much in the way of the typical selection of music genres. no matter what genre it is, and whether it's old or new time period, too many songs relate to boyfriends/girlfriends/love in some way and I just get tired of that. There should be songs that are strictly about other subjects, too. While I recognize there are a few, there don't seem to be very many.

Oh boy. Music. Seems a lot of people are really mixed in their music appreciation these days. I have a very broad taste. I'll just offer a glimpse at my YouTube favorites list (these days, there are a lot less than there used to be, with YT cracking down on copyright nonsense, so I'll list a few I used to have, as well).

Cowboy Bebop soundtracks (any Yoko Kanno music is a major win)
Vivaldi's Four Seasons
Asian Kung-Fu Generation
A song from the Russian cartoon The Magic Pony
Staind
Rutter's Gloria
The trumpet theme from Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky
Paramore
Evanescene
Hikaru Utada (as made famous by her Kingdom Hearts themes)
Libera (I swear they're angels disguised as little boys. Gregorian chant group)
Still Alive (theme from Portal. The cake is a lie! *cough*)
Some er-hu music (basically the chinese violin. Such an amazing sound)
A couple of songs from the Rescuers - Someone's Waiting for You, Who Will Rescue Me, and Tomorrow is Another Day
The Whisper of the Heart rendition of Country Roads (if you haven't seen that movie, SEE IT. It's on YouTube. Watch it. Seriously)
When the Love is Gone from the Muppet's Christmas Carol
And Johnny Cash's I Walk the Line.

I think that's a good enough glimpse, no? I've got about 250 different songs in my YouTube favorites. Plus the stack of cds I've got. And it just keeps growing *-*
"I hope you know what you're doing, Rainbow."
"You still doubt me, after all this time?"
"I don't doubt," Krys said as he paused at the door. "I worry."

lol Bonnie Tyler songs are great too :) I think can say the same... we can say we don't like a genre overall, but there's usually one or two that we like anyone from that genre...I hate rap, but Lady Sovereign's considered rap and another band I like, Chronic Future, did a rap-rock CD, which is amazing too. RENT is a good movie and has some great songs...maybe I should get some from it. Only musical songs I have on my mp3 player are from Evita.

I hate YT's crackdown on that. I had a really cool video favorited for Animals by Nickelback that someone had put to a lot of t.A.T.u's videos and it was great...but they took it away for copyright stuff.

I've never heard that rendition of Country Roads. Might have to, since you know, it's a big song in WV.

For anyone else that would like to see that song, here's the YouTube clip, in the context of the movie. Don't worry, seeing it won't spoil anything, except maybe the fantastic animation quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2buabzZIF8

Evita is awesome too! Love the Andrew Lloyd Webber shows! I find the stage show of RENT much better than the movie even. Me and Starvoyager saw it in New York City before it closed last June..it's AMAZING. You can actually rent (ha) /buy "RENT filmed live on broadway" it's called. They filmed the last performance. Highly recommend it!

I love Evita, but so many people hate it :) I have the DVD and the soundtrack for it. I saw RENT last semester but maybe I should look into the broadway version...that'd be nifty to see. I only have it on DVD in the first place because one of the grocery stores here sold it for $10
