I've experienced earthquakes both quite close to the epicenter and hundreds of miles away via after-shocks. Nothing major, though. Probably nothing above a 3 on the Richter Scale. I used to be a professional geologist. Now I just teach. :)

Born and raised in California, so yep I experienced tons of earthquakes. Most of them aren't bad, you can faintly feel the shake, and its over before you know it. The worse one was in 94'. The Northridge earthquake. It affected several los angeles county areas. It took down a freeway and tons of peoples homes.
The last one I really felt pretty good was last year the day after I brought my daughter home from the hospital. I was in the kitchen making breakfast and my cat started going psycho and I couldn't figure out why. Next thing I knew my apartment was shaking. That was pretty scary.

Thanks for your posts, guys. And thank you Regina, for your concern. Fortunately, none of my friends were hurt. My first experience of an earthquake was in San Francisco some years back, but it was a small one. The first thing I always hear before an earthquake comes is the rattling of the windows. Kind of creepy if you ask me.
