Old School Video Gaming

Post by Chibi Rachy »

I love playing video games, but I don't have any of the newer systems, and prefer to stick to what I've got. My preferred console is my SNES, but I also have a PS1 and a GBA SP.

I grew up playing the SNES with my two brothers, and later my little sister. We originally got it for Christmas one year and I know it was early 90's. I have never been good at video games in general, but I always love using them for stress release. We still own our original system, but when it started going bad, I bought my own used system instead. I have all the games my family collected over the years, and I have begun buying my favorites. Currently, my favorites include Paperboy 2, Yoshi's Cookie, and Donkey Kong Country, but it typically changes.

Since I know there are quite a few here older than me, I know there have to be some who grew up with the NES, Sega consoles, or something else very different. Share your stories, whether or not you still play on these systems, and favorite games- past or present. Just for reference sake, we'll consider "old school" to be anything that came out at the time of the SNES (90 or 91) or earlier.

I grew up on the NES and it's still my favorite game system. We actually have two NES systems, but neither work so we use them as book ends for NES game cartridges...lol. We bought a knockoff system that will play the original games.

Is it the system that plays only NES, or is it something more like the FC Twin or Retro Duo, that plays both?

very nice :) Super Mario World is fun to play and was the first video game I ever played (seeing as it came packaged with the SNES originally) since I don't think we ever got any other games that Christmas. We never did own many games though... a lot of them were rented from the video stores

Gotcha. I had considered one of the double video systems, but I didn't own and had never played NES games so it wasn't worth it. I ended up simply buying a used SNES instead. There used to be a store over an hour from where I went to college that sold all the old systems and games, but the last time I was there, they were getting rid of the last of the old games and becoming more of a DVD/Xbox/PS3 store.

Anyone happen to own a game that's still retaining pretty good value on any old system? When I was browsing pricing for SNES games (so I can purchase the games that were for the family from the 'rents), I found that my most expensive game is my Kirby Super Star game, at $32

Aww you should totally pick one up or get one of the newer reincarnations that play the games! Did you ever play the PR SNES games? I think I've finally collected them all

We recently invested in WII to play old school games. We like to "dabble" my hubby and i, with two kids, we don't get much time, so if the kids are at the grand parents house, we can play the wii for a few hours and be satisfied.
We have
Alex the kid
Bubble Bobble ( love that game)
Double dragon
Sonic - its a two player time game

Love old school games
