Rainbow cake - want!

Post by IndigoJoy »

So while reading Cake Wrecks' Sunday Sweets, I got the idea to Google for rainbow cakes. (Not the kind where you make the inside cake itself rainbow, although those are awesome, but cakes featuring rainbows.)

This one would so be an ideal cake for a Rainbow Brite-themed party!!!

looks like a star sprinkle cake! very pretty, but I wouldn't eat it. I forget what the name of it is that's used instead of icing, but I hate the taste of it...it made me sick the last time I ate it XD

It's called fondant, Chibi. Never tasted it meself, but it's easy enough to set aside xD I usually don't eat cake icing, either, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the cake itself! Hehe. My mom makes jello cakes (a yellow cake that gets holes poked into it and liquid jello poured over it), which doesn't get frosting but whipped cream on top. Much tastier.
"I hope you know what you're doing, Rainbow."
"You still doubt me, after all this time?"
"I don't doubt," Krys said as he paused at the door. "I worry."

Here I thought the icing on the cake was the best part. :P I've never tried a jello cake however, but it sounds yummy.

Indigo, any chance of baking me a RB cake? *tries to batt eyeslashes but fails.*

Yeah, yeah that's what it's called. My brain fails me that early in the morning XD I'd never had it before until I had it at a baby shower earlier this year. It was too sweet for me and had a strange taste...I'm so used to icing on cakes that I didn't like the idea of fondant at all, though I can see why it's useful for decorating.

Is that made with that thicker icing that comes in the tubes that you use for decorating on top of the normal icing?

No, that's still just frosting. Fondant has a consistency similar to clay - you can knead it and mold it and sculpt with it, cut it with cookie cutters (hence the stars on the cake) and all sorts of things. I'm not sure what the consistancy is when you eat it, but just by watching someone work with it, I'd probably compare it to like biting into an Air Head, or taffy but not as chewy.

It's hard to describe how it does taste. It's not melt in your mouth and it does feel funny having to really chew something on a cake, but it's not too chewy, if that makes any sense at all.

Hahaha, well, I've never worked with fondant before! And my cake decorating skills are iffy, lol. My mom decorated for a few years and my best friend decorated in a bakery. I should pester them to make one. ;)

I think we might have had the RB cake pan at one time.
