Nifty rainbow colored bug

Post by mtaylo28 »

Found one of these in my yard. Looks like Rainbow decided to have a little fun with this guy. I took some pictures but it did not do his glittery colors justice so I borrowed these. My husband said it looks like 5 year olds covered him with glitter glue.

Just found out it is a Rainbow Scarab (Phanaeus vindex) it is a type of dung beetle. Hard to believe something so colorful eats poop... Oh and this is a male, the female is just as colorful but doesnt have the horn and is a more typical beetle shape.

that is so funny!
God's got a funny sense of humor!

Pretty rainbow glitter bugs that eat poop. you have to laugh & wonder why?

Are these the same scarabs the Egyptians always had on jewelry & such? If they are this colorful, would be pretty jewelry, not that I would wear one, but I know they use to make jewelry out of leaves & fruit, so why not pretty bugs?

I know it is in the same family, but I am not sure if this one is found in that area. it would make a cool pendant. not that I would wear and actual bug on purpose, but a resin replica would be cool.
