Questions about 1983 11" dolls...
So I am in the process of collecting the 11" doll set. I managed to pick up two patty o' greens and they are different. I got curious and had to ask why they were different. They both say made in Taiwan 1983 Hallmark...etc...
This one has the regular plain quilted boots and longer legs.
And this one has the sneaker look and shorter legs.
I'm not sure if it was made at a different time? different line? etc?
Any help would be great. Thanks!

I'm not sure about that either, I have two Red Butlers and one has sneakers and the other has all red boots. I wonder if it depended on the manufacturer, or if that is the difference between the Mattel and the Emotions dolls? Hopefully someone else on here does know!

First, the Emotions dolls are nearly six inches taller than the normal small Mattel dolls. If you had one of each and put them side-by-side, you would notice the difference instantly. You can also look on their tags as the Emotions dolls had a different tag to the Mattel ones. The fact that I see a strip of velcro on each doll's right hand tells me they are both small Mattel dolls.
Second, 'Made in Taiwan' means exactly that. Those dolls were in fact made somewhere in Taiwan. Mattel contracted out the manufacturing and there could have been more than one contractor in Taiwan making RB dolls and each was slightly different.
Third, the bottom one is the Star Shoe version. That's a well-known variation for Rainbow Brite, Red Butler and Patty O'Green dolls.
And fourth, Patty got a small makeover when Gen 1A changed to Gen 1B. Have a look...

OK, I wasn't expecting them to put the entire album here, I just wanted one image. After clicking on the link you'll see thumbnails of the album. Starting at the top left, go straight down to the fifth photo. It has four MIB dolls, two Rainbow and two Patty. Click on that to open and enlarge it The two on the left are both Gen 1A dolls while the two on the right are Gen 1B dolls. The 1B Patty's dress is a lighter shade of green. Please ask me if you have questions about the difference between the two sub-generations or about any of the other photos in the album.

Thanks! I think I have a Geb 1a and Gen 1b. They are both the smaller version, but the star shoe version seems to have shorter legs is all. Interesting stuff! I searched forever trying to figure out why there were different versions. Thanks for your help!

No problem. Glad to do it.
I just got a European Gen 1B small Rainbow Brite doll in the mail from Italy today. She was not sold in Europe with the sleeper set as the 1B RB doll was in North America so her box is different. Her box looks like the 1B Patty box in the picture.

Also, don't be fooled by copyright 1983. 83 was the year that the figures were copyright. It has nothing to do with the date any item was manufactured. Gen 1 toys went into production in 1984 and more were introduced in 85 and 86. Some Gen 3 products made between 2003 and 2005 also said copyright 1983.

Yea I noticed that the newer RB stuff has "1983" on them. The difference isn't hard to find. Especially when you grew up with the older stuff. I'm not easily fooled when it comes to that, haha. Just trying to get my G1 versions straight I suppose. :D

I opened that doll last night and it was the Gen 1A version. Both the doll and the box were in rather worse condition than the 1B version in the photo that was in the auction. I'll soon be discussing this with the seller and returning the doll.

And what I got... A pretty tired GEN 1A doll.

The difference is too large to ignore. I would have never bought the doll that arrived had the photo showed its true condition.

oh how disappointing. It looks like the one you got was run over by a truck! I've never seen one MIB and marked up like that before. Can't be common, I wouldn't think?
