Another doll... more info?

Post by mlp4me »

I searched the forum and found no search results for philippines so I must ask: Were a lot of dolls produced in the Philippines? I've browsed the brains of my other dolls and it's Taiwan, China or just not stamped deep enough to read. Attached is a pic of the gal in question. She has no tags, no velcro on hands and a patch instead of an iron on star symbol 1983 hallmark inc and philippines on the back of her head. (My camera can't take decent close-ups so this is the best I've got.) Any info is appreciated!

I've never heard of a Philippines doll before. Although I could not say for certain, it is possible this doll is a knock-off.

Where have you found all these interesting/weird dolls?

Mattel Rainbow Brite dolls and toys were made in (at least)...

China, Taiwan, South Korea, France, Spain, Italy and Mexico. Not all products were made in all countries.

I've never seen or heard of any that were made in the Philippines. I think this is a lookalike doll. There was a very large number of different dolls that looked like Rainbow Brite in some way. They were made in the 80's and were attempts to cash in on RB's popularity. They turn up on ebay all the time.

My guess would be a knock-off too, but a very good one!

Hallmark and Mattel would have needed a brigade of lawyers to track down and prosecute all of the companies that made Rainbow Brite lookalikes back in the day. The fact these fakes were made is a tribute to the popularity of the originals.

If it's a knock-off, then it's a very very good one! See comparason pic. I know my little ponies have been imitated for years but at least they remove hasbro on the bottom of the feet. It's amazing they got away with putting hallmark licensing info on the back of the heads. I got this doll from a thirft shop a few years ago, around the same time I got the other doll with the sample tag.

If you pull the hair back on the one on the right, does she have the same egg-shaped head as the one on the left? Is one taller than the other? If so, which is the taller one?

The heads are the exact same shape. Except the philippines one doesn't have a sewn in hairline and height-wise, she is a bit smaller than the other.
(You guys are right she's gotta be a really good imitation.)

She could also just be a foreign edition. Sometimes if its too difficult to export to a certain country due to tariffs or whatever they will just license the character to a toy company with factory in that country. For example there are many officially licensed My Little Ponies that were not manufactured by Hasbro but are still official My Little Ponies. And sometimes these ones manufactured in other countries look radically different like the ones made in Spain and sometimes they look alike except for the colors and symbols like the Greek ones. So she might not be Mattel but she could still be official since she says Hallmark.
