The original 80's dolls were Rainbow Brite v.1.0

The 1996 dolls were Rainbow Brite v.2.0

The 2003 dolls were Rainbow Brite v.3.0

And the 2009 dolls were Rainbow Brite v.4.0

And I hope the originals will become Rainbow Brite v.5.0 in the future.

That would be the case, but they most of those did not have new animations to go with. Save for 1996, they were still the same design. This is a new design with new animations and web previews.

Eh, well it's only the second time that's been done. So that's my take on it. There's also the fact that I wasn't a fan until just over a year ago so the previous launches had nothing to do with. Of course, that fact was not the reason I say v. 2.0, but the first one is.

I prefer to call them Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3 and Gen 4. Or you can write it as GEN 1 etc. Or you can say First Generation etc.
